This morning before leaving Dawson City we drove up to a local lookout called Dome Hill which afforded a wonderful 360° panorama of the area and of the town sitting at the junction of the Klondike and Yukon rivers. From this vantage point the effect of mining for gold is evident, with numerous long winding mounds of river gravel and rock that are apparently the spoils of major dredging in the Klondike River.

A slow drive through the streets of Dawson city left us with mixed impressions. On the one hand there is a definite feeling that the town has retained much of its pioneer character with many old buildings and the board walks along the sides of the streets, but on the other hand numerous newly renovated hotels and eating houses testify to the role of tourism in the towns economic life.

The drive from Dawson City to Whitehorse makes for a long day of over 500 kms. And while for much of the way the scenery is magnificent, for us the day was a bit of a slog since we had only recently driven it, and we were anxious to get to Whitehorse to effect repairs to the Tiger.

The days weather was changeable. One moment blue sky and sun with temperatures in the 40°Fs and the next a snow storm of hard snow particles with temps of 35°F. The change to snow was like the onset of a summer thunderstorm in that it came and went quickly.

About 20 km from Whitehorse and just before the Klondike loop meets the Alaska Highway we took a short detour to Takhini Hot Spring and spent a pleasant 40 minutes soaking in the beautifully hot outdoor pool.
