Day 40

We are parked on a disused section of the Alaskan Highway at the northern end of Kluane Lake. To our west and south are the Kluane Mountains providing a wonderful view from this, otherwise ordinary, camp site. The day is sunny and clear with a chill breeze blowing.

Further to the west and a little south, behind the Kluane Mountains, are the St Elias Mountains which contain some of the biggest mountains in North America including Mt Logan at 19,500ft.

The Kluane range and glimpses of the St Elias mountains have dominated the scenery today as they have been visible ahead of us for much of the day as the road has headed generally west and north from Whitehorse.

We had a late start from Whitehorse today, not getting underway until nearly 13:00. It seems the long hours of daylight are encouraging us to take things easy. The last week or so we have driven long distances each day and we are trying to get back to around the 150 miles per day we had set as our goal when planning this Alaska journey. Today was only 179 miles, so despite the late start we have stopped for the day before 17:00.

Just before we stopped this afternoon we were treated to a glimpse - and that's all it was a glimpse - of a bob cat .
