We called into the township of Tok this morning for fuel. It seems like there is only one street maybe that's why it has been designated Mainstreet Alaska.
There is a burnt out Texaco gas station on the southern end of the town that is completely over run with derelict vehicles of all kinds. I thought I even saw a jet powered lawn mower.
At the gas station we got into two or three conversations with locals; about the town, a teachers convention in Fairbanks and what to see in the area. We have not had a more friendly episode anywhere so far.
The road continued to paralell the Alaska range on our left for a while with very long straight stretches of road.
Mid morning as we were stopped at a bridge over the Gerstle River - the bridge was built in 1944 and is one of the few remaining bridges from the original construction of the Alcan - when a motor home pulled up beside us. It was the Czech family we had first met at Watson Lake, they saw us parked and dropped into to say hello.
At Delta Junction it started to snow, but again the snow did not stay on the ground.
In Fairbanks all the campgrounds were closed still. At the Riverside Resort, where we had intended to stay, the owner was clearing water from the parking lot when we pulled in. He offered to let us stay in the parking lot for the night. But we decided on a motel - that would give us the facilities to wash both ourselves and our clothes and prepare our stuff for the trip to Deadhorse. And at $74 a double, it was a pretty good deal.
