We were quite excited on this day as we were finally going to arrive in Pharr, meet the trip organize Norm and start the final preparation for the Central and South America legs.
The road south - and it was due south for 200 miles - was another flat and hot affair, with very green low vegetation on both sides of the road. We bucked a head wind the entire way which knocked the fuel consumption down to 13 mpg.
The towns of Pharr, McAlen, and Alamo texas have all merged into one big metro area and was much bigger than we had expected. It seemed like a big trucking area as we could see trucks for sale everywhere and truck maintenance businesses are common.
The RV Park that Norm had directed us to was a bit of a surprise. It has over 400 sites, many with mobile homes of permanently parked RV's. Its busy time is winter when it is FULL of snow birds (people who travel from the northern states and Canada for the cold periods). We met the lady who is the entertainment director for the camp - we had a 20 minute conversation about the entertainment she organizes. It seemed like nothing less than a Cruise ship on land. I guess this is what old people do!!.
One of the interesting things we noticed - many of the RV's are tied or strapped down to the ground to prevent them flying away during hurricanes. By the way it is hurricane season down here.
Late in the day Norm came to visit and we had our first briefing for the trip south.
