Another day in La Libertad. I am sitting in the passenger seat of the Tiger, the engine is idling to charge the house batteries and as a side benefit the air conditioner is on. The vehicle thermometer says its 88°F outside but that does not do justice to the feeling of heat and humidity.
This morning before 7:00 am I went into the markets to buy some shrimp (prawns for the Aussies) and vegetables as I decided a shrimp and veggie dinner would be a good project for the day. It would give me something to do later in the day and would also make me try and communicate with the vendors. As it turned out the communication was easy - point and pantomime. One and a half pounds of prawns cost me US$3.50. Pretty good pricing.
At 9:00am we went with Norm and a local friend of his to visit two Salvadorian national parks. The first, Walter Thilo Deininger Park, quite close to where we are camped was really a jungle reserve. The attraction was simply to walk through the jungle and get some information about the plants. For example we learned that the Saber Tree, a very large tree that has big thorns on the trunk is hollow.
The second park was a lot further away, close to San Salvador, and was a really interesting natural water park. There were a series of pools filled by natural water flow from the jungle. The pools have been formalized as swimming places. Really quite remarkable. It appeared by the crowd to be popular with the locals.
