We headed north and then east along a minor road to the village of Silvia to see the Tuesday market. The Lonely Planet guide book suggested it. The road was another one of the now familiar twisting mountain roads that followed the side of a valley. However this road was not complete and we eventually came upon the road crew that is building the last few miles.
The market was a treat with lots of the locals dressed in their traditional Indigenous attire of bowler hat, blanket cape and blue skirts (even the men). We spent a pleasant couple of hours sightseeing. Though photographs are few as these folks don't seem to want to have their photograph taken.
Nina met some fellow travelers, Sandra and Bernie from Calgary in a class B van. They seem to be heading in roughly the same direction we had planned.
After leaving Silvia we met up with Sandra and Bernie on the road and traveled in convoy back to Popayan looking for the turn off to San Agustin. Unfortunately we got lost in the towns maze of streets and had to hire a taxi to get us onto the correct road. For a while the San Agustin road was a nicely paved, but twisting mountain road, but after the village of Coconuco it turned into a very rough dirt road. This slowed our progress so much that we had no chance of reaching San Agustin before nightfall so we elected to stay the night in the streets of a very small village named Paletara.
After parking we had the usual conversation with the locals who wanted to know where we were from, look in the vehicle and general socialize and laugh at our poor Spanish. We shared a bottle of wine with Sandra and Bernie and then the chill of our 9,770 ft altitude drove us inside to our respective vans.
Camping
We were on the road to San Agustin late in the day and ran out of time so stopped at this village and simply parked in the street.
