This morning was wet and somewhat miserable. Last night there had been some discussion about leaving both vehicles here for the day and catching a bus to San Agustin but Nina and I decided we would drive and Sandra and Bernie opted to come with us.
Well the road turned out to be just a horror, wet, muddy, potholes everywhere - a real test of the Tiger and us. The first hour we made 10 miles, at the end of hour two we had travelled 15 miles, and it was becoming clear that if we completed the 60 miles to San Agustin tonight we would be staying there tonight as there was no chance we could make it back.
Needless to say we did get there, at about 13:30, with the last 15 miles or so on good paved roads. After lunch in the town, and the usual crowd and conversations about the vehicle and our trip we made our way out to the Archaeological Park that was the reason for visiting the town in the first place. For Nina and I this is our first experience with Inca relics. The park is spread out with a lot of large stone carvings and burial mounts.
Back in town we started looking for directions to a hotel we had heard of when a man walked up to the vehicle wearing a jacket with the hotels name on it. After some discussion he got in with us and directed us to the hotel; capping off an interesting, successful, but muddy day.
Camping
Late yesterday afternoon on the dirt road from Popayan to San Agustin we met a German couple in a black Landrover Defender; they told us about a hotel near San Agustin that would allow us to park on the property. The place is called Anacoana and its about 4kms out along the road to El Tablon and Estrecho. We got water, power, toilets and hot showers. GPS N01° 53.973' W76° 16.873'.
