We got a late start from Iquique as I wanted to hang around the flight school using their wifi to fix a problem that had developed with the software that downloads maps to our GPS. Got it fixed eventually but it left me with the feeling that maybe we have too much technology with us - you think!!

The drive south along the coast was relaxing and interesting. East of the beach the ground rises a couple of thousand feet, sometimes sharply sometimes more gently, and it is bone dry. We did not see a single wild green plant for the whole day. We saw a few trees or shrubs that had been planted but nothing wild. The coast is also largely un-inhabited with only occasional very poor looking dwellings or settlements. We even saw our second golf course with out any grass, the greens are made of sand and you are allowed to smooth out a path for your ball with a special rake before putting. Just goes to show that golfers are addicted and will go to extreme lengths for their game.

Camping

The coastal road from Iquique to Tocopilla provides many/frequent opportunities to pull off the road and camp next to the ocean. We saw a number of locals pitching tents, and at least one other overlander vehicle camping beside the ocean.
