Today we decided to take an excursion to the town of Pampa Linda. It seems there is some spectacular mountain scenery and a glacier to see. But what first attracted us to this town is the road. It seems it is a narrow road and dangerous, so to protect travelers the road is only oneway. It is open to traffic going to Pampa Linda until 2:00 pm, then closes to new traffic, and opens to returning traffic after 4:00pm.

To get to the start of the Pampa Linda road we had to travel south to the bottom of Lago Guterra and then turn west through the national park entrance gate.

It was 40 kms from the entrance to the "town" of Pampa Linda and the road was narrow, definitely single lane in places. And the scenery was spectacular. Initially the road travels beside Lago Guterra and we had some beautiful views of the lake and mountains looking north. Leaving the lake the road continued west along a river and eventually arrived at the parking lot of the lookout over the Black Glacier. Another 8 kms brought us to Tronador Base, a small collection of buildings at the base of a simply unbelievable wall of rock - Tronador. The rock was hard to see because there was mist everywhere, but it shot up at least 2000 feet in one jump. And waterfalls everywhere, there were dozens of good size falls coming down the face of the rock. Really spectacular. A very worthwhile excursion. We are beginning to see why Patagonia is El Dorado of outdoor enthusiasts.
