It was raining when we woke this morning and except for a few momentary breaks when the sun won through it was wet, overcast and not particularly pleasant all day. Though even the weather did not prevent us getting some of the wonder and awe from the never ending vistas of mountains, glaciers and lakes. But .. this must be just a stunning place when (or maybe it's if) the weather is clear.

The road today was a mix of narrow essentially single lane, compact dirt like one would find on a secondary track in a US Forest, plus some sections that are being prepared for sealing which were wide with lots of loose gravel. All sections had pot holes though the newer sections ready for sealing were worse. On the better sections we can maintain 30 mph and on the more pot holed sections only 20 mph.

Late in the afternoon we came upon a side road on the east to Ventisquero Colgante which is inside Parque Nacional Queulat. After about 4 km this road brought us to a campground and parking area. After a short walk was a lookout that gave us distant views of a hanging glacier and two very huge waterfalls that were draining the glacier. There was also a suspension bridge over one of the rivers draining the glacier which allowed us to get a closer (not too close) view of the raging white water. The campsites here had rain shelters over the picnic table, we took that as a sign that rain was a regular feature of the camping season.

Camping

Just off highway 7 is a small camping area and a lookout that provides distant views of Ventisquero Colgante (a hanging glacier). The access road is about 4 km and narrow. Rain shelters at each campsite, toilets. The showers had gas and the pilot lights were burning but there was not enough water pressure to start the gas burner to heat the water.
