We spent much of yesterday trying to work out which of the many glacier tours we should take; El Calafate is famous for the glaciers that can be visited. Today we decided to drive west to the Parque Nacional and have a look in the hope that this would help us decided. On the way out the road traveled through Patagonia steppes country, wide, wind swept grasslands. To say that the Perito Moreno Glacier was a surprise would be a massive understatement. The road rounded a bend and there before us was this massive wall of ice.
From the car park we had to take a shuttle bus to the viewing area and what a view it gave. The face of the glacier is no more than 500 yards away. The view point is on a peninsula that is positioned about mid way along the face of the glacier.
We spent some time walking the raised walkways to get views from different angles and finally decided that we had such a good view that we did not need any tours.
We have seen, and walked on, glaciers in a number of places but this is without a doubt by far the best view of one we have ever had.
Back in El Calafate we bumped into Sam and Bernie, had a beer with them and did some initial planning for a hike that Sam, Bernie and I are planning to do.
