Overnight we decided that we would give the boat tour a miss and drive ourselves to the Seno Otway Pinguinera a rookery on an ocean inlet west and a little north of the town. The drive was via a reasonable quality dirt road through more flat wind swept steppe country.

We spent about an hour walking along the boarded paths watching the Penguins go about their business. They seemed largely unconcerned about their human admirers as they walked from their burrows out to the beach where they seemed to play in the water; though I guess they were feeding. It's really a great sight to see a little band of these guys marching in line towards the sea.

Back in Punta Arenas we did some grocery shopping, found the ferry terminal after some searching and decided that we would take the highway along the north shore of the Straits of Magellan rather than wait for the ferry the following morning. So, once again, we headed out along good sealed road into flat wind swept grass lands. The wind is really unbelievable, I don't think I have been anywhere else where it is so strong and so consistent - or is that persistent.

Camping

Driving east along Highway 255 on the north side of the Straits of Magellan there were many places to pull off and camp. We found one with a little shelter from the fierce winds.
