As you can see from the photographs we started the day with a bit of exploration around the hotel and beach front which included spending some time watching a local fisherman with his strange circular boat.
There after a walking tour of the down town area of Hoi An. Much of the town of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage listed area with some quite old houses and a number of "assembly halls" - these we would call community centers for Chinese merchants and fisheman who moved to Hoi An. There are a number of such halls which are specific to a Chinese province.
The Tan Ky house is about 230 years old, it is one of the oldest remaining houses in the town, and was originally built by a Chinese merchant. Notice the flood level signs on the wall of this house. It seems that the entire town floods each year in the wet season.
The bridge in picture 13 is about 400 years old and was built by the Japanese. You cannot see it from this angle but a temple was added in the center far side by locals after completion. Thus the bridge is known either as "tne Japanese bridge" or "Temple bridge"
