Smokey Bay, Streaky Bay (Hotel), a few rugged coastal cliffs, Venus Bay and throw in the sea lions of Point Labatt and in brief that captures today. What's missing from that brief narrative is just how beautiful todays stretch of coast is and how sparcely populated. The country side is mostly grain or sheep farming country with farm land abutting the coast, with scattered small communities every 60 miles or so. Smokey Bay was one of the smaller communities we passed through today (photo 4), it consists of maybe 2 dozen buildings only.
We camped the night in Venus Bay Caravan Park. Another small community. The park was nearly full to capacity, mostly with caravans and tow vehicles, with travelers from all states of Australia and a few foreign tourists in rented camper vans. Nearly every site also had a tinny, this is what Australians call a small aluminum fishing boat.
The camping ground highlighted one of the impediments to growth of this beautiful coastline; water, or lack there of. There is no natural surface water anywhere on the Eyre Peninsula. Bore water is used for washing and stock while rain water collected in large tanks, is the only water fit for human consumption.
