The goal for today was to make it to Whyalla, a largish town almost at the head of Spensers Gulf. Along the way we visited the town of Kimba whose claim to fame, is that it is half way across Australia (from east to west), and that it is the home of the Big Galah. On a nearby hill we also found metal statues of John Eyre (the first European to cross the continent of Australia from Sydney to "Perth") and his aboriginal companion Wylie.
Between Kimba and Whyalla we passed through the town of Iron Knob an old iron ore mining town that seems to be well on its way to dying. Iron Knob and its nearby neighbour Iron Baron were the first iron ore mining operations in Australia and the nearby port of Whyalla was developed mainly as a loading point for the ore from those mines. The nearby source of iron ore saw BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary Limited) open a steel mill and ship building operation in Whyalla in the 1960's.
We camped in Whyalla at Discovery Parks - Whyalla Foreshore an up market caravan park on the beach front a few kms out of town.
The beach front was interesting as the shore and beach has a very shallow slope, so the waters edge changes by about a kilometer as the tide rises and falls. Thus at low tide one can paddle in the shallow water a long way out into the "sea"; as you can see in a few of the photos.
