Today was intended to be a bit of nostalgia, we planned on camping the night in a place named Chambers Gorge, it is an informal camping area on private property that is somewhat off the beaten track and being "informal" has no facilities at all. The nostalgia relates to the fact that we camped in this place in 1997 when on an outback trip with our then young children and we remember this place with some fondness.
However, before getting to the camping at the end of the day there was some travel to be done and a few things to see; like a last glimpse of the Flinders Ranges, more river gums. a few emus who could not work out that they should probably not just run down the road. Morning coffee was at an old railway town called Parachilna which seems to rely on the tourist trade today.
The main sight seeing activity of the day was a mine tour in the town of Blinman (population 15). Quite a good tour of a small copper mine, actually got to go underground and see some of the old workings. The mine is managed by the towns people as a tourist attraction and is required to meet all the safety and other regulations appropriate to an active mine. We got lots of detail about how the Cornish miners (and Aussie miners who worked in the Cornish tradition) went about their work.
Then it was on to Chambers Gorge about 70 kms up a very good dirt road towards Balcanoona, followed by 9 km of very rough road and river bed to the camping area inside the gorge and with a fine view of Mount Chambers. There was only one other party of campers in the gorge, and we picked a place about a mile away from them.
The evening camp was only marred by the flies that were persistent and annoying; but thankfully they vanished after the sun went down. At which time the stars came out to add their twinkle to an almost perfect night.
