It's a bit hard to put into words the contradictions that today brings. On the one hand we are in an incredibly remote place and on the other hand tonights campground will have quite a population (maybe 100 people), we will see a number of offroad tourist buses at the campground, and there will be a helicopter base at the campground. Our starting point for today is already 500km (310miles) from the last town we passed through (Kununurra), it is the only fuel stop we have seen since that town, and today we are going to drive another 185 km (110miles) north and west from Drysdale.

Though parts of todays road was very rough with long patches of large corrugations (wash boards) we made faster progress than we expected with the days drive taking only 4 to 4.5 hours. Much of the final 80km was along the Kimberley sandstone plateau through forests of Livistona Palms.

Once at the Mitchell Falls campground we took a walk along the track to Mitchell Falls to see Little Merten Falls and pools. This was to give us a taste of the walking track and prepare us for tomorrows hike to Mitchell Falls.

There is quite a large camping ground at Mitchell Falls, though its a bush camp and the only facilities are toilets. That is provided you ignore the helicopter base which consists of a single building 3 to 4 multi million dollar jet helicopters and the very large bulk fuel tank which is used to feed the choppers.
