This morning we visited another attraction of the Napier Range, Tunnel Creek about 35km south of Windjana. The "tunnel" which is about 750 meters long is nothing more than a small limestone cave carved out by a wet season river/creek. The thing that sets this cave apart from other limestone caves are the resident fresh water crocodiles. The one in picture 8 is real. This cave was once the hideout of an aboriginal outlaw or freedom fighter (depending on your perspective) name Pigeon or Jandamarra. See Tunnell Creek

After the tunnel visit we returned to Windjana Campground to hang out for the remainder of the day and wait for the bat spectacular that we were told would take place at 5:35 in the evening.

So as 5:35 approached we joined a couple of hundred other tourists sitting on the sand in Windjana Gorge near a waterhole containing a couple of dozen freshies. Sure enough at 5:35 a huge swarm of fruit bats emerged from holes in the limestone cliffs of the gorge and started flying west. The real show however was that a good number of the bats tried to take a drink from the water hole containing the crocs and of course the crocs tried to make those bats into dinner. If you want to see a youtube video of a similar situation click here or go to netflix and watch the series on the Monsoon.
