In her inimitable style Nina had another hike on the agenda this morning as a last taste of the Bungles before we made the trek back to Halls Creek. This one was called Echidna. We had no idea why that name was chosen, nor what we would see. The guide to the hike suggested there might be some climbing at the end of the hike but that was all. Unlike our earlier hikes this one was in the North West of the park so we could be certain that there would be no beehive domes.
As it turned out this was a hike that started in a narrow stream bed and eventually followed a narrow crack into the body of the Bungle mountains. It was really quite magical walking along this very narrow crack (at times only a couple of yards wide) with rock walls towering at least 500 feet above. We spent a lot of effort trying to capture the scene with cameras but as is often the case reality and the human eye defeats the camera.
After the exhilerating experience of Echida we made the long trek back to Halls Creek to spend the afternoon and following morning preparing for the Tanami Road and its 1000 km haul back to Alice Springs.
We spent the night in Halls Creek Caravan Park. The place was surprisingly crowded. We had read some bad reviews of the only "campground in town" and thought that the reviews might deter potential campers, but apparently not.
