As I mentioned a few posts back we have been "marking time" around the Forsayth/Georgetown area waiting for the expected delivery date of some parcels in Croydon. Well today we moved on to Croydon and were pleasantly surprised to find that 2 of the 3 parcels were waiting for us. The final one is not expected until Friday (4th) so we will spend 2 nights here in Croydon.
The drive to Croydon was easy, paved road almost the entire way. Along the way we stopped to look at an old brick chimney which was part of a gold mining operation in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Near the chimney is a small toxic lake a left over from the gold mining, and also a small wetland with abundant bird life. How do the birds decide which lake to make their home? No idea.
Once in Croydon we went to the train station to have a look at the famous Gulflander motor-rail which runs a weekly passenger service between Croydon and Normanton. We had quite a long chat to the driver. Among other interesting info we found out that the term motor-rail means a vehicle intended to run on rail tracks but with the drive system of a truck or bus. So this one has a 13 liter Gardener diesel engin a 4-speed "crash" gearbox and a rear differential just like an old truck.
