It seems to be the way of this country that the day starts off with a gentle feel, the birds are out, the light is soft and it feels comfortable, and this morning we tried to absorb that feeling. Nina took in her usual early morning walk and I repaired that broken tent latch. On leaving the Roadhouse we visited the nearby ford crossing of the Victoria River. The grass near the river was surprisingly (to us) high and we tried to capture this by comparing it to Nina. Not sure that worked.
Not far down the road we came to the old crossing of the Victoria River and had a little play in the sand and on the rocky shore.
The first real stop of the day was Timber Creek which is really not much more than a Roadhouse and hotel. However it does have a police station and even a police station museum and if that is not enough a nearby headland on the Victoria River is named Policemans Point. We lunched there and as you can see in the photo below the river is impressively large.
Just after visting Timber Creek and Policemans Point we came across a small sign that said something about a lookout. This turned out to be a real find. The road took us 10km or more to a spot that looked down into the valley of the Victoria River and gave a great view of the village of Tiber Creek. However more surprisingly it lead us to some information signs and a tribute to a WWII military detachment, the NAOU (Northern Australia Observation Unit) that patrolled Northern Australia. The unit was nicknamed the Nackerros.
Continuing on our historical journey we visited a boab tree that was blazed by one A.C.Gregory one of the first whites to explore this area. He was exploring by boat on the Victoria River and made the blaze July 22nd 1855.
Late afternoon we pulled into a remote camping site in Keep River NP. Only 2 parties in camp for the night. There is a special mobile phone tower installed 2 kms from this campsite for the Northern Territory National Parks so that late comers like us can still book and pay for the campsite online. So much for a remote experience.
In the interest of being cooler I tried sleeping in a hiking tent.
