Surprising Wyndham

It was a very peacful night and we were up early to watch the sun rise on the nearby escarpment, we could not resist one last shot. We have encountered this sign in photo 2 in many places. They seem to be cast them about when ever there is slight or major road damage. We have guessed that they signal "danger". Nina finally caught a photo of one for us this morning.

The first order of business this morning after getting back to the highway was to find a trash bin as we needed to unload any trash before we crossed the border into Western Australia. Thankfully we found a truck stop just after joining the highway. But while unloading our trash bin we noticed one of our tyres was going down. So for the second time on this trip we were changing a wheel. That somewhat changed the focus of the day as we now needed to find out whether the tyre could be fixed or we were again playing the waiting for a new tyre game.

Fortunately we found a tyre shop in Kununurra and after an hour or so it was fixed, just a puncture. With that fixed we were heading to Wyndham a small town on the coast about 90km from Kununurra as that was where Brendon was heading and we anticipated meeting up with him that night. Along the way we passed over a bridge on the Ord River which is the river that is dammed to make Lake Argyle.

The drive to Wyndham is a good sealed road. Along the way we encountered this sign which is a memorial to a women named Maggie (duh!) who with an aboriginal companion caught birds in this particular valley in the early 1900s. Apparently catching birds was an industry in those days.

The town and/or port of Wyndham is nothing special as a town but its location is simply spectacular. Though one needs to drive up to the Bastion a hill top 340m above the town. From this view point one can see a vast flat expanse of wetlands where 5 different rivers meet. Right now, in the dry season much of the wet land is dry and firm and provides good access to various parts of this vast area. It muct be a massive waterway in the wet.

While biding our time waiting for Brendon to turn up we went and visited Parry's Lagoon which provided views of abundant bird life.

We stayed a second day in Wyndham in order to sort through the gear we were carrying for Brendon and Daniel. The plan is we will not meet again on this trip. We have to drop some of Daniels stuff in Broome and will meet Brendon back in Sydney.
