These two cyclists were at the campground in Elliott last night but we did not get a chance to chat so this morning we stopped on the roadside and offered them a cold coke each. Mark is from Edmonton, Alberta and Everlyn is from Switzland. They are cycling from Darwin to Adelaide and were finding the 36°C temperatures a bit trying not to mention the strong headwinds.
The Threeway Roadhouse is where the Barkley Highway(East to West) joins the Stuart Highway (North to South) and where we turn East to cover the 636km to Mt Isa.
Todays section of the Barkley was flat and boring so we took every opportunity to find points of interest. At one rest stop we found this pond which had attracted a wide range of bird life.
We camped for the night at another rest area called Frewina. It is on the edge of a very extensive wet area. At this point in the dry season the wet area has largely dried out and is therefore easily accessible offering a wide area for camping. From the HEMA maps it is evident that in the past there have been many artesian bores in this area. Also the floor of the dry parts of the lake bed there is a lot trash from old vehicles. One imagines that at some point this was a station site or maybe military base. In any case this was a great area to camp and gave Nina plenty of scope for her evening and morning walks.
