Today started with a few more photos of the bird life on the remainder of the lake at the Frewina rest Area. Once underway we were soon at Barkley Roadhouse which seems once to have been part of the homestead for Barkley Station (it may still be). We were really impressed by this roadhouse. It is the best maintained and most up-market roadhouse we have seen in all of our Australia Travels. In addition the kissing lizards out the front of the roadhouse entrance were very impressive and the Guinea Fowl running around the place were entertaining.
Much of todays drive was also flat and boring so again we were looking for points of interest. At one rest stop we found a large flock of pink galas cavorting above us and Nina spent some time capturing their antics.
This is really an isolated section of road. Between the Threeway Roadhouse and Mt Isa the only places with any supplies are Barkely Roadhouse and the town of Camoonweal. Camoonweal is just into Queensland.
Memorial to the longest sheep drive. I know you cannot read the writing on the plaque on the rock. Well it tells the story of a sheep drive from Victoria to The Barkely Tablelands. The drive started with 11,000 sheep and after 16 months and 3500km only 4000 remained. Read more about this here
We spent the night at a rest area at the junction of the Barkley Highway (Hwy 66) and Highway 84 which travels North to Lawn Hill National Park.
