We thought today would be "just a driving day", but as it turned out there were a few things along the way worth seeing. But first there was another effort to capture the extend to which the mine-works in Mt Isa, visually dominates the town.
We had not realized that the abandoned town and uranium mine of Mary Kathleen was along this mornings route. So were delighted when we saw the sign to the entrance to the town. We also found the lake and dam on Corella Creek that was the water supply for both the town and mine. There are no buildings left on the town site. They were sold off to surrounding towns when the mine closed.
In Cloncurry we found the first hangar building used by the fledgling business Queensland and Northern Territory Air Service which of course is the origin of todays QANTAS. While in the very small town of McKinlay we found the Walkabout Creek Hotel and the ghost of Mick Dundee plus some of his stuff.
Our day ended in the very small town of Kynuna. A pub, a gas station and not much else. Surprisingly both establishments provided camping. We chose the gas station, $15 per night for an unpowered site which included hot showers. The best value on the trip so far.
