Continuing south along the Notom-Bullfrog road this morning we had good views of Strike Valley, a distinct north-south valley formed by sandstone ridges on the east and west sides.
After about 20 miles we came to the intersection with Burr Trail which took us west up a very spectacular series of switch backs onto a plateau in the heart of the southern part of the park. We spent some time admiring the switchbacks, photographing the ER and other travelers.
Continuing west along the Burr we found a 4x4 trail to Strike Valley Overlook and Upper Muley twist Canyon. We traversed some of this trail but eventually were stopped by a tree lined corner that was too narrow for the ER (at least too narrow without cutting down a tree or badly scratching the ER). So we resorted to that old fashion means of travel called walking. Forty-five minutes later we were on top of the overlook - it was worth the walk, and we got our daily exercise.
After some time traveling south on the Bullfrog road we took (yet) another 4x4 trail, this time to Hall's Overlook. This was 4 miles of rough and rocky trail to another fine view, this time into a pretty valley backed by huge sandstone blocks.
For a change of pace we continued south to Bullfrog Marina. Quite a surprise this place was. In the midst of barren red desert on the shore of Lake Powell we came across a scattered settlement sporting a large hotel and a large marina, hundreds of parked cars, and many many boat trailers. The marina seemed to be inhabited entirely by people wheeling their belongings back and forth between their rental house boat and their cars. We hoped for their sake that the boating was fun because the packing and hauling certainly did not seem so!
We finished the day with a jaunt up SR27 to Star Springcampground, close to our jumping off point for tomorrows trails.
