Last night camping spot (and its network of trails) gave us a chance to do a few miles of walking before we hit the road today. In case I have not mentioned it one of the goals for our mini-adventure is to see if we can maintain an exercise program while on the road. We have set this goal on previous trips but never seem to be able to stick to it. This time though there is added incentive and I need to exercise my recovering leg to re-build muscle and get some flexibility back into the damaged ankle. Thats the "recuperation" bit.
A short drive this morning took us to the little tourist town of Winthrop and we spent a while strolling the main street window shopping. The streets were pretty crowded with tourists in cars, on bikes and with various types of RVs.
The surprise of the day was the Grand Coulee Dam. We have driven through this part of the country before but some how on those previous visits missed seeing the dam and its visitors center. We were a little taken aback by this oversight as the dam is quite a sight and not easy to miss. According to information in the visitors center it is the third largest hydro generating system in the world - when I get a chance I will google this it does not seem to be in the same league as Itapu (on the border between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil) and the Three Gorges in China.
We had a real stroke of luck when it came to tonights camping spot. We followed some sketchy information and a pretty primitive road to a place called Jones Bay on the shores of Roosevelt Lake (the lake behind Grand Coulee Dam) to find a picturesque camping spot right on the lake front.
The real bonus was that we had the place to ourselves, no other campers and only two visitors during the course of the evening.
Price was $9 for seniors.
