Yerevan is a very old city with parts of the city being inhabited as far back as 3000BC, and the fortress of Erebuni (from which maybe the modern name of the city is derived) being established in 782BC. The following link Yerevan will give more details on the history of Yerevan.
Yerevan sits in a bowl and north of the city center on the rim of that bowl is Victory Park built and named during Soviet times to commemorate WWII. Today Victory Park is the location of the statue of Mother Armenia, a huge statue of a fearsome looking lady with a big sword.
Running down hill from Victory Park to the city level is an elaborate water feature called the Cascades.
Nina and I joined our tour group for the morning ride to Victory Park and thereafter spent a number of hours wandering the city by ourselves including descending from Victory Park via the Cascades.
Rain in the early part of the day drove us back into our hotel but in the later afternoon the sky cleared and we spent sometime people watching in nearby Republic Square.
