We got our nice new South Dakota driver licenses this morning, although as we pulled up in front of the address of the Licensing Department it was not obvious we were in the right place. Parked in the street was a National Guard convoy of Hummers and trucks, and the building that was supposed to house the licensing department had National Guard signs all over it.
However, we were in the right spot. It looked like we were the first customers of the day, and quickly one of the officers sat us down and walked us through the process. The scrappy receipt from last night was a momentary problem but soon overcome. The process took a while but within 40 minutes we were out of there with our brand new photo-licenses. The only problem I can see with these licenses is that they have a holographic mark imprinted which will make photocopying difficult.
The next chore for the day was to wash some of the dirt and diesel soot from the truck, we had heard about a "large equipment wash" in the town of Milbank, so that was the next stop.
Mid afternoon we stopped at a nice picnic spot by a river along highway 12 for an afternoon siesta. We contemplated staying the night but after a 3rd visit by a disreputable looking local we decided it would be prudent to move on. Fortunately we found an almost as nice camping spot at a State Park near Sunburg.
