This morning we had a rush of visitors curious about the truck. We noticed last night that a number of our fellow campers were looking at us and our yellow truck and were a little surprised that none approached us. But by this morning curiosity had overcome any reluctance and we had more than 20 people drop by over a period of an hour. It is a while since we had such a large group in one place asking us questions. As always the visitors are curious, but polite, and as always we tell our story, show the vehicle and also seek to be polite and friendly. The way we see it; if we did not want visitors we should have chosen a different truck and different color.
Once underway we had cooler but still pleasant weather as we headed deeper into Kansas. We thought the countryside was pretty with scattered clumps of forest, rolling hills and farm land in various stages of late growth and harvest. Grain trucks were on the road in numbers, the grain silos appeared busy and farmers were out on their tractors plowing and harvesting.
It does not yet feel like the real prairies but the land is certainly flattening out. The country is dryer than our last trip through this region (summer of 2011) as we are a bit later in the year.
Our camp for the night was Cheney State Park (just west of Wichita on the shores of the Cheney Reservoir). We paid $2.85 for park entrance but no camping fee as the camp host forgot to call and collect. The camping and day use areas of the park are very large but tonight was almost deserted.
