Today was spent "trying out" the truck. Our first experiment was actually to get down off our ridge top camp. The short, steep, narrow descent to highway 95 proved to be a non event but re-enforced one of yesterdays lessons; namely - over rough roads one must travel slowly. Our first stop for the day was a valley called Comb Wash were we encountered some narrow sandy trails, and a small creek crossing. The truck handled all the small obstacles without raising a sweat.
Late morning we commenced the route that we expected to occupy us for the next two days. Starting on highway 95 a series of forest roads travel north to highway 211, a total distance of 50 miles. We travelled about half the distance today. the route led us through forested plateaus on narrow roads made muddy by recent rains, and led us along narrow ledge roads on the walls of sandstone canyons.
We found a grassed clearing for our nights camp, another camp fire and a nice close to the day in the afternoon sun.
The lessons from the day is that the Unimog truck can handle anything we are likely to confront, the traction and control are great. The limiting factor for the vehicle is the size and weight of the camper. The height of the camper limits our ability to access roads/trails with low overhanging trees. The weight of the camper causes a lot of swaying if one travels too fast over uneven roads/trails.
