Today we took a bus tour south along the coast into the nearby country of Montenegro and in particular visited the towns of Kotor and Budva. Both of these towns are also walled towns like Dubrovnik. Though in neither case are the walls in quite as good a condition.
During the journey we were presented with a bunch of information about the history and geography of the region. For example once into Montenegro the waters are no longer called the Adriatic Sea and the coast no longer called the Dalmatian Coast as those names cease to be applicable once one is sufficiently south to be passed the last island.
During 1991-95 a major war was fought between Croatia on the one side and Montenegro and Serbia on the other. The Croatians call it the Homeland War. If was (eventually) a successful effort by Croatia to break away from the Soviet era country of Yugoslavia. During the fighting the city of Dubrovnik was under siege, was heavily shelled, and much of todays city has been reconstructed included the wall and many of the buildings in the old town..
