The second leg of our two day scenic extravaganza was our return journey from Bergen by high speed catamaran ferry. Now of course the ferry boat was not the scenic bit only the transport. The scenic bit was the transit down Sognefjord and particularly the final leg into Flam harbor.

The ferry ride took 5 hours and the initial leg our of Bergen harbor picked a route between islands through sometimes very narrow channels. Along the way we stopped at a few villages that looked incredibly remote, and passed by individual dwellings perched on tops of craggy mountains. The purser pointed out one farm house on top of a rocky outcrop and noted that the only entrance to the property was via a long ladder dropped down from the homestead.

The high point of the day was undoubtedly Sognefjord. We traveled down this fjord for over half of the journey flanked on each side by almost sheer rock walls. We were told that it is the longest fjord in Europe (I guess there is one somewhere else longer or the claim would have been "in the world").

Towards the end of the route we passed the entrance to Naeroyfjord that leads to the village of Gudvangan. This fjord is a World Heritage Site by virtue of the scenic value of its narrowness.
