It would to accurate to say that I have long been nervous about the job of re-installing the hot water tank. That is one of the reasons I did not remove it to check it for leaks much sooner. I have been concerned that I would not be able to reconnect the engine coolant supply well enough to prevent leaks. That concern was based on the difficulty I foresaw of working in the tight confines under the kitchen sink, and because even the original installation had some very minor leaks - suggesting that it was difficult to make good connections.
But never the less with the new tank in hand there was no choice. So this morning I spent 2.5 hours working on it, some times methodically analyzing connections, sometimes struggling to push hoses onto connectors. But at the end of the time the new tank was in place and all the connections had been made. The first test of turning on the fresh water pump produced a small leak which was easily fixed by tightening a connection. The second test of running the coolant heater and the engine produced hot water (as hoped) and no leaks. So maybe I had achieved the impossible and got it all back together.
About 100km down the road I discovered that there was a minor coolant leak from one of the connectors under the truck but that my new connections were still looking good. So I tightened a clamp on that outside leak and we continued. At the end of the day it looks like it is all working.
Our camping place tonight was a roadside picnic/rest area near the town of Oldenburg in Germany.
