Today was an animal day. With a driver and car to take us around we started with a visit to an Elephant orphanage, the Daphne / David Sheldrick Elephant Santuary. They collect young elephants from the wild that are in danger for what ever reason and raise them. Each day between 11:00 and 12:00 they open up a feeding session to the pubic. It is a popular session and today there were maybe a couple of hundred people (including us) in attendance. The feed that looks like milk in large white bottles is a vegetable concoction developed over many years of experimentation.

Nairobi National Park was the main part of the day. I cannot call it a stop because one does not stop but rather drives around inside the park on a series of sometimes rough dirt tracks. In our case we drove around in our own car, but it is possible to take a tour in a National Park Bus.

The park is really quite amazing. No doubt it was once a large tract of ground remote from but with in easy reach of the city of Nairobi but today, with the expansion of the city, it is being surrounded. Yet despite the proximity of a large urban area we saw large herds of Zebra, Antelope, Buffalo plus groups of monkeys, a good number of Ostrich and a number of less well known (to us) birds. We also saw a few Hippos but really only their eyes watching us from the safety of the water.

All in all a very good introduction to our African animal watching experience
