We got a prized extra hour with the giraffes this morning as our flight (to the next stage of this adventure) was delayed. We had quite a long and smoggy drive to Nairobi airport as traffic was thick and barely crawled along. We understand from our couple of short visits to this city, and from locals, that this is the usual situation. Too many people, too many vehicles and infrastructure that lags the city. A very common story. Anyway after a pleasant 3 hour flight we dropped down onto the airfield at Livingstone, Zambia to be met by a blast of hot air and 34°C. What a change from the mild temperatures of Kenya and Tanzania. Immigration was quick and efficient and we were soon in a small bus on our way to the Zambian/Zimbabwe border and our next stop Elephant Camp, near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The Zambian/Zimbabwe border was also fast and efficient and we joked with the immigration official while he did our paper work and put a large visa sticker in our passports. In fact we commented to each other later about how cheerful, relaxed and jovial the officials were at both immigration offices and how different this was to the typical Australian/American/European experience.
Another short drive through the town of Victoria Falls and we were soon at our accommodation, Elephant Camp which is located inside a private game reserve about 10 km from the famous falls.
To say this place is luxurious would not do it any thing like justice. Individual tents for each couple, about the size of a small house, hot and cold running water, inside toilet, inside and outside shower, a private plunge pool, and air conditioning.
All in our party thought we could be comfortable here.
