This morning was another plane ride, to the village of Khajuraho and while it was only a short hop it took up much of the morning delivering us to our hotel around 2:00pm. Then after a short break to get "organized" we were off for a visit to a local historical sites famous for its erotic carvings.
The main site visited during the afternoon was described in our tour notes as one of India's "seven wonders". It is a huge complex of medieval (10th century) Hindu and Jain and temples built amongst wonderful gardens and was a really interesting and relaxing site. Some of the temples were decorated with some very explicit erotic carvings, presumably an indication of a "liberal" view of sex and sexuality. In Central Asia we heard a number of times that a "donkey is a mans best friend", well based on these carvings I guess for 10th Century Hindu soldiers "a horse was a mans best friend". As you can see from the photos, a horse of short stature seems to be an advantage.
