Yesterday we continued our "escape from the heat". Our northerly route eventually took us to Stralsund on the German north coast and then across to Rugen Island. Traffic on the island's main road was very heavy and slow so we started looking for a campground and eventually settled on Ostseecamp Suhrendorf which just happened to be on the west side of Ummanz Island which in turn was off the west coast of Rugen.
Getting to our chosen campground proved to be a bit of a challenge as we had to negotiate a series of tree lined minor roads to get there. The roads were only just wide enough for us to squeeze past on coming traffic but in many places the trees that lined the roads leaned in effectively making a single lane road. The campground turned out to be a very large establishment, informally laid out on a beach front on a series of grass spaces spread within a forest. The forest broke up the view of other campers so that we felt like the place was only moderate in size but in truth there must have been a thousand or more campers. The big attraction of the place was the water of the Ostsee (this is what the Germans call the Baltic), and the water front was alive with swimmers, sail boarders, kite boards and power boats.
I used some of the quiet time at Ostsee to try the trucks vario-pilot feature - this is the feature that allows the steering wheel and pedals to be moved to either the right or left hand side of the vehicle.
Some of the additional equipment that has been added (at my request) had to be dismantled in order to complete this exercise.
We are planning on going to the UK in the near future and driving will be easier if I can move the controls to the British/Australian side of the truck.
