Today we did a self guided tour to the islands of Mull and Iona. A 45 minute ferry ride from Oban to Mull, a 1 and 1/2 hour bus ride across Mull followed by a short ferry ride to Iona. This is such a very common tourist excursion that you can buy all the required tickets (and return) in a single package at almost every shop in the town of Oban.

What is the attraction. Well apart from some fantastic scenery along the route, moors, mountains, and sea shore the Island of Iona is thought to be the place where christianity got started in Scotland. There is the remains of a nunnery and a stone Abbey on the that island. Although the current one is more recent Christian buildings have existed here since the 6th century.

On the long bus ride across Mull we were entertained with a nice commentary by the local bus driver and learned that Mull (and it's many nearby Islands have over the years been visited by or produced many famous people. For example Lachlan Macquarie, once governor of the colony of NSW, was born and raised on the small Island of Ulva just off the coast of Mull.

We were blessed with great weather and as a result Nina and I got some (we think) nice photos.
