This morning after driving for 20 miles or so we realized we had made a bit of a research mistake and so had to retrace our steps back to For William. The mistake was to do with the location of the West Highlands Railway. A section of track that still runs steam engines on some trains and the train that was used in the Harry Potter series as the Hogwarts Express. We had mistakenly thought that this railway line was on the Ilse of Skye but this morning we discovered that it runs from Fort William to the ferry port of Mallaig.

So once we had discovered our mistake we set about correcting it, and retraced our route to For William and then followed the very scenic road to Mallaig. Unfortunately the road only afforded us glimpses of the railway and even those took a bit of effort and a deal of persistence. It is amazing that after all these years I can still be surprised by the devotion Nina has to taking photos. Good thing too, as I would not go walking in the rain for photos of a railway tressel.

You will notice from the photos that the Mallaig road presented us with a number of low underpasses advertised at 13'6" or 4.1m. These were a bit of a worry initially as we measured our truck when we first got it and have the numbers 13'6" and 4.0m in our heads as its height. So depending on which of the (inconsistent) heights were actually in effect we either had 0.1m (3.9 inches) or nothing as spare head room. As it turned out we cleared all the underpasses without any unpleasant noises.

At the end of the day we returned from Mallaig to Fort William and continued on our road route to the Ilse of Skye.
