We spent a day sightseeing around the area. Since the weather was not bad we started our day with a walk along the sea cliffs at the nearby Duncansby Head and lighthouse.

This was followed by a visit to The Castle of Mey. originally built by the Earl of Caithness in the 1500s. The building and lands were bought by the Queen Mother in 1952 after the King died and subsequently renovated by her. There after she (the Queen Mother) became a regular visitor to the castle, coming every August for 50 years. She seems to have been well known by the locals. The castle is still used by Charles and other royals as a regular retreat. The Castle of Mey is the only property The Queen Mother ever owned in her own name.

Nina finished off the day with a visit to Mary Anns Cottage. This is an intact crofters cottage, still in exactly the same condition as it was when the associated croft was last worked in 1990. It gave a fascinating glimpse of the crofters way of life and how that had changed over the previous 100 years. For example from using the attached cow shed as a toilet to modern in-door plumbing.
