We did a bit of sightseeing today. The battle field of Culloden is close to Nairn so that is where we went first. I had already mentioned the events associated with this place when we were on the Isle of Skye as this is where the battle took place that Bonnie Prince Charlie had to escape from.
The battle field itself is just a grass covered field with a stone memorial cairn and some engraved stones to mark where the dead from each clan were buried. However the large exhibit building had a very elaborate exhibition detailing the events leading up to the battle as well as the battle itself. The battle was a crushing defeat for the Jacobites (thats what Bonnie Prince Charles and his supporters were called). They lost 1500 men in the battle compared to the English 50.
The second stop of the day was a somewhat strange collection of stone mounds or cairns. In truth no one really knows what these are. But they seem to have some of the typical solar and lunar alignments that one comes to expect from stone structures thousands of years old.
We spent a second night at the campground near Nairn. Once back at camp I took the opportunity to check the oil level in the trucks hubs. It seems that the leak I have observed in the left rear hub may actually be oil rather than brake fluid as I first suspected. That particular hub required a top up of about 100ml of oil.
