This morning we picked up our rental car and started the "tour proper". Between GPS devices and cell phones we had no trouble negotiating the freeways around Dublin and then on to some of the narrow country lanes we had been told about. I could tell right from the start that it was going to be a bit of a treat driving a snappy little car on these narrow twisting roads.
In addition to just enjoying the picturesque countryside we made one tourist stop today at a place called Glendaloch (which means valley of two lakes) where there is a ruin of a 12th century religious settlement that was apparently the home of St Kevin for a period. The place was quite interesting in that the buildings were all made of stone with even the rooves made of stone and mortar. The center piece of the site is a circular stone tower also with a stone roof. The place was interesting, despite the fact that I had never heard of St Kevin before.
After Glendaloch we followed a narrow "military road" over some mountains and had some really impressive views of Irish highlands. We arrived in Kilkenny about 5:30 and quickly found the Pinecrest B&apm;B where we are to spend the next 3 nights. Seems like a nice clean, friendly place.
