The Ring of Beara was todays mission, a route that traces the coastline of the Beara Peninsula. We set off in overcast weather with periodic showers but by the end of the day the sun was out and shinning brightly. The Irish countryside really looks picturesque in the sun.
We had a very enjoyable scenic day, traveling along narrow country lanes (where in places the vegetation has managed to merge above the road turning the road into a green tunnel), over bare mountain passes with wonderful views down to the lowland farms and ocean, walking over the ruins of some 19th century copper mines, and visiting small colorful villages (eg. Eyeries) that at this time of year seem almost deserted.
We got a little exercise when we took a short hike to view a large sink hole (and arches of rock) being formed by the ocean undermining a small headland.
One of the stranger attractions of the day was a cable car that provides transport from the peninsula to the nearby Island of Dursey. Not only does this cable car carry people but it is the primary means of transporting all kinds of goods and materials to the island even cattle. So to facilitate the transport of cattle the floor is a grate to allow the cattle droppings to be easily washed out. Unfortunately we did not get to ride the cable car as it was booked out for the remainder of the day.
A great day.
