We spent yesterday and today exploring, the sun was out and the temperature moderate so walking around was very pleasant. Yesterday (Thursday) was a normal business day so it eventually became pretty busy, we found a supermarket near our hotel and stocked up on some food. Because today Friday is both Moslem prayer day and Christmas day the place is a lot quieter with many things (though not all) closed.

Generally the city, its buildings and streets seem pretty run down. The buildings are dusty, in need of painting, the roadways are all paved but of mixed quality, and the footpaths (side walks) are generally an assortment of levels and materials that make walking an exercise in concentration.

No doubt the pride of the city is the enormous Hassan II Mosque built on a rocky platform reclaimed from and protruding into the Atlantic Ocean. Built in the 1990s at a cost of $750M it has the worlds tallest minaret.

During our Christmas day wanderings we found the famous Rick's Cafe a real life cafe and bar intended to replicate (or at least impersonate) the fictional Cafe from the movie Casablanca. We had a drink there at lunch time and decided that it was a fitting place for our Christmas Dinner (of lamb shanks and vegetables).
