The motivation for going to the city of Bilbao was for us to visit the cities Guggenheim Museum but the campsite we chose turned out to be a bit of a feature as well, though a little more of that later.
Bilbao has one of only 4 Guggenheim Museums in the world and like it's sister establishments this one is housed in an impressive unorthodox building with much of the buildings curved exterior being covered in titanium. The builders and architects experimented for over a year in order to determine how to use heat and chemicals to give the Titanium different hues. An unexpected feature of this Guggenheim (at least unexpected by the designers) is puppy. Puppy is a 42 foot high statue of a West Highland Terrier covered in 60,000 plants and flowers. Puppy was meant to be a temporary exhibit at the entrance to the museum but the citizens of Bilbao fell in love with it and so it became permanent.
An interesting quote from one of our guide books
"there are virtually no straight lines except the floor ... each glass and limestone panel is unique, designed by a computer
and shaped by a robot"
So now to the camping spot. We found out about this place from a number of sources, include our Aires guide, and every source described it as a parking place for motorhomes not a campground. It is situated high up on one of the hills surrounding Bilbao on a terraced lot with 24 hour security, electricity and water at every spot/pitch with the most spectacular view of the city. And there is even a bus service into the old town of Bilbao with a stop right in front of the place. Highly recommended.
